A pressure gauge is bought on one number and that number is routinely misunderstood. Accuracy is stated as a share of the full span of the scale rather than of the reading you are taking, so a gauge that covers more range is a less accurate gauge at your pressure. The allowance is also banded across the dial: tightest over the middle half, one point wider in the first and last quarters.

Buy the smallest scale that comfortably reaches your highest pressure. A 250 PSI gauge setting a 32 PSI car tire carries an allowance of several PSI at a reading where one PSI matters, while a 75 PSI gauge at the same grade carries a fraction of that. Before you trust this

  • The sidewall figure is the maximum the tire is permitted to hold, not a target. The number on the vehicle door placard is what sets your pressure.
  • Read pressure cold. A tire driven even a few miles reads high, and bleeding it down to the placard figure while warm leaves it underinflated once it cools.
  • A dashboard warning lamp is a late alarm rather than a gauge. Federal rules require it to warn only after a substantial drop below the placard pressure.
  • A Presta valve needs a head that closes on it. A Schrader-only gauge will not read a road bicycle tire whatever its scale says.

Lifespan and care

  • A dial gauge that has been dropped can read several PSI out and look perfect. Compare two gauges against each other occasionally; agreement is not proof but disagreement is a finding.
  • Digital gauges fail by battery, usually in the cold, and usually the first time you need one in January. Keep the vehicle gauge analog if it only gets used in winter.
  • Pencil gauges survive a glovebox for decades because there is nothing in them to break. That is the whole argument for keeping one in each vehicle.
  • Grit on the head causes a bad seat and a low reading. Wipe the head and the valve stem before reading, particularly on a wheel that has been through winter salt.

Questions

Why is a bigger gauge worse?
Because the allowance is a share of the span rather than of your reading. Two percent of a 250 PSI scale is 5 PSI at every point on the dial, including at 32 PSI, where 5 PSI is a sixth of what you are trying to set.
What do Grade A and Grade B mean?
They are banded allowances. Grade A is documented as 1 percent of span across the middle half of the dial and 2 percent in the first and last quarters; Grade B is 2 percent and 3 percent. Consumer listings usually quote only the middle-half figure, which is the best case.
How do I compare a digital gauge stated in PSI against a graded dial gauge?
Work the dial gauge allowance out in PSI first, then compare like with like. A digital gauge stated at plus or minus 1 PSI beats a Grade B 150 PSI dial gauge, which is allowed 3 PSI in its middle half.
Is resolution the same as accuracy?
No. Resolution is how finely the display reports, so a gauge showing 0.1 PSI steps can still be 2 PSI wrong. Accuracy is the allowance; resolution is only the granularity of the number you read.
