How this is worked out

The rule

  • needed = union of the tool groups each selected task requires
  • dead_weight = typical_large_set_contents minus needed
  • missing = needed minus typical_large_set_contents
  • coverage_percent = count(needed and in typical_large_set_contents) / count(needed) x 100
  • Every count on the result is computed from the selection. None of them are written into the text.

What it assumes

  • Tool groups are counted, not individual pieces. A set of ten Phillips drivers is one group.
  • The typical large set contents list describes what mixed household kits generally carry, not any single product.

What it does not account for

  • Piece counts. A 262-piece set and a 39-piece set can cover the same groups.
  • Quality, steel grade and warranty, none of which a group count captures.
  • Consumables such as blades, tape and fasteners.
  • Whether you already own any of it.
