There is no correct bench height, only a correct height for a given body doing a given task. Published averages hide that, which is why a bench built to a number off a plan feels wrong to most of the people who use it. The workable approach is to measure your own standing elbow height once, then offset from it by task.
Measure your elbow, not your height
Stand in the shoes you actually work in, on the floor you actually work on. Let your arms hang, then bend one elbow to ninety degrees with the forearm level. The distance from the floor to the underside of that forearm is your standing elbow height, and it is the only measurement this page needs.
If you cannot get someone to measure it, stand against a wall, mark the level with a pencil held in the bent hand, and measure the mark afterward.
Elbow height runs at roughly 0.62 of standing height across adult populations, which is where the worked figures further down come from. Use the ratio to sanity-check your measurement, not to replace it. Proportions vary enough between people that the tape wins over the ratio every time.
The offset depends on the task
Detail work wants the piece close to your eyes, so the surface goes above elbow height, commonly two to six inches above. That range covers electronics, carving, and anything where you are looking at the work rather than leaning on it.
General assembly wants forearms roughly level and shoulders down, which puts the surface a little below elbow height. Three inches below is a sensible default and covers most of what a household bench is used for.
Heavy work wants your body weight over the tool. Planing, chiseling, filing and hammering all get easier as the surface drops, and four to eight inches below elbow height lets you put mass behind the stroke instead of only muscle.
Seated work resets the whole calculation, because your elbow height sitting is not your elbow height standing. Measure it seated, in the chair you will use, with your feet supported.
Worked numbers
The table below runs the ratio and the offsets for a spread of statures. Every figure in it is arithmetic on your height, not a survey result, so treat the column that matters as a starting point to test rather than a specification to build to.
Read across from the height closest to yours, then check the result against how a bench you already use feels. If your current bench is comfortable for assembly and lands two inches from the table figure, trust your bench.
The spread across the table is worth noticing on its own. Between a person of 62 inches and one of 78 inches, the general assembly figure moves by ten inches. Any single published bench height is going to be wrong for one end of that range.
When one bench has to do everything
Build the bench for the heaviest work you do, then raise the work rather than the bench for everything else. A surface that is too low for detail work can be fixed with a box, a raised jig or a vise that lifts the piece. A surface that is too high for planing cannot be fixed with anything.
This asymmetry is the single most useful thing on this page. Height that is too low costs you comfort on light tasks. Height that is too high costs you control and force on heavy ones.
If the bench is already built and already too tall, the honest options are shortening the legs or standing on a platform. Neither is elegant and both work.
Mats, shoes and the floor
An anti-fatigue mat raises you and therefore lowers the bench relative to your elbow. A three quarter inch mat moves your effective bench height by three quarters of an inch, which is inside the range you can feel. Measure with the mat down, or accept that you have chosen a slightly lower bench.
Work boots do the same thing in the other direction from slippers, and by a similar amount. This is why the measurement instruction says the shoes you actually work in.
A sloping or uneven garage floor moves the surface differently at each end of a long bench. Level the bench to itself before you measure anything, because a bench that is out of level is a bench where your elbow figure is only right in one spot.

Before you trust this
- These are starting points derived from a body ratio, not a medical or occupational health recommendation. If a task already causes pain, bench height is one factor among several and not the one to change alone.
- A bench that suits you on bare concrete is a different bench once a three quarter inch anti-fatigue mat goes down. Measure with the mat in place or accept the offset.
- Height and rigidity are separate problems. A bench raised on blocks to suit your elbow racks sideways under a plane stroke unless you brace it, and a bench that moves under the tool is worse than one at the wrong height.
